Naturalist’s Paradise Adventure (6-hours)

If Skagway is the big city, Haines is a naturalist’s paradise. Cradled at the base of the Chilkat Peninsula, flanked by the Lynn Fjord and Chilkat River, it boasts some of the most pristine country in Southeast Alaska. This trip begins with a 35-minute catamaran ride along the steep-walled fjords that connect Skagway to Haines. Your naturalist guide will immediately start acquainting you with the area’s unique plants, animals and ecosystems, as well as the natural history of Lynn Canal, as you look for humpback whales, harbor seals, and a variety of seabirds. This trip combines glacier flightseeing, hiking, and kayaking. The action starts in Skagway, where you meet your bush pilot and head off to explore the skies. You’ll pass Rainbow Glacier, the Davidson Icefall, and the waterfall-strewn cliffs of the Lynn Fjord. This tour provides a rare opportunity to focus on photographing the stunning scenery of Skagway and the surrounding area with a local, professional photography guide. The emphasis is on learning and taking time for excellent photography, rather than the photography being incidental. Your journey begins when you board your private vehicle and climb the steep road towards the White Pass. The dramatic scenery soon surrounds you—a wonderland of giant mountains, azure lakes, and stunted forests. Your guide will suggest shots, and help you get the most out of your camera. Issues discussed will be composition, exposure, and depth of field. The goal is to find out your present level of photography, and introduce and advance you to the next level. The pace is unhurried and you will have ample time to set up the best shots. After several photo sessions at a variety of locations, you will visit the Yukon Suspension Bridge. Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve Rafting (6.5-hours)

Starting at the pier in Skagway, you’ll embark on a 45-minute shared fast ferry ride along the steep-walled fjords that connect Skagway to Haines. Your guide will acquaint you with the history of Lynn Canal as you look for humpback whales, harbor seals, and seabirds. In Haines, enjoy a riverside drive along the incredibly scenic Haines Highway. Glacier-clad mountains thrust to the sky, colourful wildflowers line the road, and green riverside channels provide habitat for moose, bear and trumpeter swans. Upon arrival at the put-in point at the river, you will board your raft and enjoy a scenic float down the Chilkat River through the famous Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve. Paddling is not required, as your expert guide will push the raft along, leaving your hands free for your binoculars or camera. Along the way, your guide will interpret the natural history of the area, and share some exciting stories from life in the Alaskan wilderness. You will learn to spot bald eagles and gain an appreciation for the challenges that bald eagles face to survive. Beginning in August, pink salmon begin their run up the Chilkoot River to spawn. This is the best opportunity to see brown bears as they are often witnessed feeding along the banks of the river.
