Alaska Sky Trekking Adventure Vacations

Sky Trekking adventures or “Flying safaris” offer the ultimate wilderness experience in almost every way: views of the most remote terrain with the freedom to soar or land at will. At Entrée Alaska, we customize sky trekking itineraries that are over-the-top, exclusive experiences. Your private plane. Your customized itinerary. Communing with nature anywhere from Anchorage to the Arctic Circle.

Imagine flying high above country never explored by man. Land to visit remote villages seldom seen by travelers. Land on river bars to observe bears, with no hint of human presence. Touch down on virgin beaches where herds of walrus tumble together in the sun. Beachcomb for treasures delivered by the massive North Pacific currents. Picnic among brilliant wildflowers in the intense Alaskan summer.

In March, follow the famous Iditarod Sled Dog Race. June through early September, watch the bears on the Katmai Coast gorging on beach grasses and spawning salmon. Observe rare migrating waterfowl on the Kenai or Seward Peninsulas. Fly-fish in lakes and streams so unexplored they resist naming and mapping. Soar among the impossibly high peaks of the Wrangell-St. Elias range in search of Dall sheep. Or head north to the remote Brooks Range to look for the elusive caribou. All this to a backdrop of towering mountains and a carpet of colorful wildflowers.

You’ll be expertly cared for by your Alaskan bush pilot/guide, and safely shown the secret wonders of this great land. Every night, you’ll land at a superb wilderness lodge or village B&B where you’ll enjoy a friendly welcome, comfortable accommodations and home-style Alaskan dining.

Sky Trekking the Iditarod

This is a trip for travelers who want to experience true Alaska in the winter—the 12 hours of daylight, the serene snowy landscapes, and “The Last Great Race on Earth.” We spend 13 days following the Iditarod sled dog race, getting caught up in the locals’ excitement as they cheer on the dogs and their mushers over the 1,150-mile trail. The historic race—unlike anything else in the world—sees teams race from Anchorage across desolate tundra, through native villages, along the windswept coastline, and over sea ice to Nome. Your own adventure won’t be quite as extreme as you hop from the race start to various checkpoints and eventually to its exciting finish in your own private ski-equipped aircraft. Along the way, you’ll soar above dramatic landscapes, touch down for trailside lunches, and do a little mushing of your own.

Sky Trekking Prince William Sound and Wrangell St. Elias National Park

To imagine the possibilities for sky trekkers over Prince William Sound and Wrangell St. Elias National Park, we probably only have to tell you that the former incorporates 3,000 miles of shoreline, myriad tiny islands, and is surrounded by the Chugach Mountains on three sides, and that the latter is the largest national park in the United States at 20,000+ square miles of mountain wilderness. Swoop over isolated fjords, land near the world’s second largest glacier, picnic on a deserted beach, catch wildlife unawares. All at your whim.

This 6-day/ 5-night sky trekking adventure focuses on Prince William Sound, whose shorelines are heavily indented by deep fiords and small bays, and Wrangell-St. Elias National Park—the largest in the United States (six times the size of Yellowstone!). You’ll fly over Montague Island, explore a mine miraculously constructed in a setting more remote than the jungles of the Amazon, and hike in pristine surroundings. Finally, a day trip out to the Katmai Coast provides great opportunities for wild bear viewing. The area is seldom visited, and on one trip, guests saw more than 50 bears! Accommodations include both the casual, beautifully situated Kennicott Glacier Lodge and luxurious Hotel Alyeska, tucked amid the Chugach Mountains just 40 miles south of Anchorage.
