  • Hotel Captain Cook

Arguably the only luxury hotel in Anchorage, and boasting downtown’s only four-diamond restaurant, the Captain Cook offers top service and accommodations for international travelers. Three restaurants, an athletic club, a full business center, and 14 shopping venues complement the 547 guest rooms. Perhaps the best features of the centrally-located hotel are its panoramic views of Cook Inlet, the Chugach Mountains, the Anchorage cityscape, and Mt. McKinley.

  • Winterlake Lodge

Named one of America’s best lodges by Travel + Leisure magazine, Winterlake Lodge is an oasis of stunning scenery, sophisticated comforts, and wilderness adventures. Located nearly 200 miles northwest of Anchorage, on the route of the world famous Iditarod dog sled race, Carl and Kirsten Dixon’s remote log lodge sits on 15 acres overlooking Finger Lake and the Tordrillo Mountains. The main building includes a comfortable room for relaxing by the fire and viewing the lake from large picture windows, along with a dining area and large kitchen (Kirsten has published two cookbooks—so you can expect excellent cuisine). Other amenities include a yoga room, massage therapy, hot tub, and lakeside wood-burning sauna. Guest accommodations are in smaller log cabins with private baths.

This 7-day/ 6-night trip is designed to introduce you to the Iditarod, “The Last Great Race on Earth”. Extending for over 1,049 miles through some of the roughest and toughest country in North America, mushers and their dog teams race from Anchorage to Nome, facing bitter cold, fierce winds and long, lonely hours of darkness. Being a spectator to the race is unforgettable, and though you can’t experience all of it, you’ll get a great taste of the excitement as you learn about its history, how to raise championship dogs, and how to drive your own team—then watch as the pros cross the start line. And as the renowned Anchorage Fur Rendezvous Winter Carnival now coincides with the Iditarod festivities, you can savor two great Alaskan wintertime traditions in one visit!
