Impact on Travelers in Alaska traveling to/from Denali
The Bear Creek Fire, located between Fairbanks and Denali National Park, continues to burn along a section of the Parks Highway. First ignited by lightning on June 19th, the fire has grown to approximately 26,000 acres and is being actively managed by ground crews, air tankers, and support teams.
The Alaska Department of Transportation is currently managing traffic along the Parks Highway (mileposts 259–278) with intermittent lane closures and pilot-car escorts. While travel through the area remains possible, delays should be expected, and road conditions are subject to change based on fire activity.
Smoke from the fire has affected visibility and air quality across Interior Alaska, including parts of Denali Borough. Travelers with respiratory sensitivities may wish to take precautions and limit prolonged outdoor exposure when conditions are poor.
