The Itinerary

What is the Denali Train Tour?

Denali train tours are a memorable way to explore Alaska’s famous Denali National Park. Our Denali train tour journey is bookended with visits to Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city and winner of the All-America City Award four times over. There are countless things to do in Anchorage, depending on your interests and activity levels. Love active vacations? Try cycling the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, an 11-mile long paved trail following the Cook Inlet from downtown Anchorage to Inlet park. Along the way you may spot eagles, owls or even moose – so keep your eyes peeled! After a day of explorations in Anchorage and an overnight stay at the historic Hotel Captain Cook, it’s all aboard! Alaska Railroad’s GoldStar Dome train cars offer an unparalleled level of service, gourmet food, and a unique upper-level outdoor viewing platform. Delectable meal options abound with GoldStar service, including fresh local Alaskan Arctic Cod, slow-braised pot roast with garlic mashed potatoes and even a vegan Midnight Sun Penne, cooked perfectly al dente.  Traveling first between Anchorage and Talkeetna, the Alaska Railroad’s GoldStar Dome train car will cross the Knik River with the impressive Chugach Mountains painting a picture-perfect backdrop.  On clear days, views of towering Denali may be seen just south of Talkeetna, and as you venture north you’ll marvel at the deep and awe-inspiring Hurricane Gulch.  This Denali train tour is especially unique, as the route spans two of Alaska’s five geographic regions – Southcentral and Interior Alaska.

Upon your arrival at Denali National Park, you’ll enjoy a stay at the Grand Denali Lodge – nestled at the edge of the park’s entrance. Here you’ll relax in style, soaking up views of North America’s tallest mountain peak, Denali. On the third day of your journey, you’ll venture deep into Denali National Park aboard the Denali Backcountry Adventure Bus, where you may spot moose, bear, wolves and other impressive wildlife. The afternoon brings you an aerial adventure, returning you to the park entrance via Alaskan bush plane – you’ll soar over mountain peaks, glaciers and past the North Face of Denali. Your Denali train tour wraps up the way it began, on an Alaska Railroad GoldStar Dome train, as you enjoy a scenic return trip to Anchorage and another overnight stay at Hotel Captain Cook. This Alaskan train tour is the perfect way to experience authentic Alaska, a Denali train tour and extraordinary wildlife – all in a compact time frame. All aboard for Alaskan adventure!
