This trip focuses on two of Alaska’s great national parks—Denali National Park & Preserve and Glacier Bay National Park. The former is home to majestic Denali and myriad wildlife, offering countless opportunities for hiking and enjoying the stunning Alaska Range by foot, air, and rail. Accessible only by air or water, pristine Glacier Bay is a marine wilderness characterized by snow-capped peaks, deep fjords, tidewater glaciers, whales, and seabirds galore. When you’re not witnessing glaciers calve and humpbacks cavort, you’ll be dining on such local specialties as Alaskan spotted prawns, halibut, and Dungeness crab.

The Itinerary

1 | GLACIER BAY NATIONAL PARK, AK

Arriving in Gustavus via Juneau, you will be met and transferred to your hotel, where exquisite Glacier Bay National Park forms the ideal backdrop to your hand-crafted log Inn. Accommodations are at Glacier Bay’s Bear Track Inn, in a Lodge Room.

2-3 | GLACIER BAY NATIONAL PARK, AK

Spend the day whale watching in Point Adolphus, one of Alaska’s richest marine wildlife habitats. With any luck, you’ll spot humpback whales, bald eagles, Steller sea lions, seals, sea otters, and orcas in this magically pristine environment. Accommodations are at Glacier Bay’s Bear Track Inn, in a Lodge Room.

Boat into the waterways of Glacier Bay National Park and watch as tidewater glaciers calve in front of you. Keep alert for rookeries full of puffins, scan the rock formations for mountain goats and brown bears, and pass by Marble Island and its resident sea lion clan. Accommodations are at Glacier Bay’s Bear Track Inn, in a Lodge Room.

4 | TALKEETNA, AK

After flying to Anchorage via Juneau, your private driver will transport you to your next hotel via one of the most spectacular highways anywhere—but not before a very special stop at Happy Trails Kennels, world famous for their championship sled dogs. Later, wander through the quaint town of Talkeetna. Accommodations are at Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge, in a Mountainside Room.

5-6 | DENALI NATIONAL PARK, AK

A private transfer will deliver you to the Denali National Park entrance, where you will board the Denali Backcountry Adventure bus for a full-day wildlife tour that will take you 90 miles into the Park. Watch for black bear, grizzly, moose, caribou, Dall sheep, wolf, and wolverine. Accommodations are at Denali Backcountry Lodge, in a Creekside Cabin.

On your sixth day explore the wonders of Denali’s wilderness from your rustic retreat in the heart of the Park. Choose from guided hikes and naturalist-led wildlife viewing excursions, mountain biking, fly fishing, and panning for gold. Accommodations are at Denali Backcountry Lodge, in a Creekside Cabin.

7-8 | ANCHORAGE, AK

Take a scenic flight back to the park entrance. You’ll soar through the awe-inspiring Alaska Range, over glaciers, and to the North Face of Denali. Complete the journey to Anchorage on the world-famous Alaska Railroad GoldStar dome train. From the open-air platform or glass-covered observation deck, you’ll soak up views of tundra, deep river canyons, and mountains—including magnificent Denali. Accommodations are at the Hotel Captain Cook, in a Junior Suite.

On your eighth and final day your driver will transport you from your hotel back to the Anchorage airport in time for your return flight. Safe travels!
